Art in Odd Places

Animals climbing up a street sign on East 12th
by Pat Arnow

If you're riding the F train this month and notice a person wearing a suit painted with blocks of orange, beige and gray that match the train car, you have probably stumbled on a Lower East Side/East Village project called Art in Odd Places. Nearly 30 installations and performances add another layer of strangeness and wonder to the area through September.

If you walk around the neighborhood, you're likely to run into some of the projects. Look for the toy animals climbing up street signs on East 12th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, or large prints of city icons plastered to the side of a building on Ludlow between Rivington and Stanton.

Some of the performances for "Art in Odd Places" sound like they'd be worth seeking out. This has to be good — the Mattress Parade and Bedding Circus. It will include "fantastical sheet tucking, forward bedrolls and pillowcase flipping" performed to an "Oompa beat." That's starting at Avenue A & 13th Street, ending at Avenue A & Delancey Street from 3-4 pm September 30.

Or how about projections on themes such as "Afternoon of a Faun" at 174 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street, 9 p.m. to midnight Thursdays through Saturdays September 7-28 and October 4.

Check out the groups' charming interactive map. artinoddplaces.org

Point to a dot on the map, and two lines appear, one pointing to the artist, and the other to the name of the installation. Such as, "Kiss My Liquid Assets," (it has to do with an albino frog near 14th St.) or "Crystalline Cliff Dwellings on a Chain Link Fence" (which is just what it sounds like on East 4th St. between C & D.

You can also pick up a map at the Tompkins Square Library, the 14th Street Y, Sunflower Video and Porn at 119 Essex St.
