Empty Lot Tea Leaves

by Yori Yanover

Yesterday's Curbed ran an entry from a reader who reported: "As I was walking to work this morning, I noticed that the municipal parking lot south of Delancey between Essex and Ludlow was completely empty and its pavement torn up. Is this an omen of grand things to come ( i.e. ugly, 20-storey-high, luxury eye sores) or just regular city maintenance?" MissLinda, on the LES Message board, commented: "I walked past it the other day, it doesn't look like much of a construction site. Looks more like they are repaving the parking lot since the dirt was all smoothed out and they kept the lamp posts. When they dig the big hole, that's when you should shed a tear for the people in Blue with a southern view. Poor, poor people in Blue."

She was referring to the Big Blue Thing that Ate Delancey, just across the street. ivorbigun, another message board person, wrote: "I wonder how the buyers of south-facing apartments in Blue would feel about having their view obstructed by a rival high-rise," and added one suggestion: "Beer. The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems - Homer Simpson." This morning the lot, on Essex between Delancey and Broome, looked nothing like a parking lot getting ready to be repaved. The fact that all the expensive munimeters had been yanked and taken away should be a serious clue to something more construction-oriented coming up.

I have no idea, however, how to interpret the fact that the parking sign is toppled on one end of the lot and up on the other. And the fact that workmen are repaving the sidewalk -- what does that mean? Help, somebody read these tea leaves!
