Bagpipes on Grand Street

by Pat Arnow

Each year, the Fire Department presents a memorial service at the Firemen's Monument on Riverside Drive and 100th Street for the firefighters lost in the line of duty in the past year. This morning, the department honored Lt. Howard J. Carpluk, Jr. and firefighter Michael C. Reilly, both of the Bronx. They died in the same fire. Afterwards, downtown firefighters gathered on Grand Street near Jackson. Bagpipers practiced on the sidewalk before going to the meeting room where they would have food and beer.
