It was a scene you won’t see on, say, Law and Order. This week, some 7000 of New York’s finest are being fitted for new bulletproof vests, and the action takes place under the Williamsburg Bridge, outside our Seventh Precinct, at 19.5 Pitt Street. No idea what led to the NYPD picking this location for most of Lower Manhattan’s police to come get their lifesavers, but there they were, quiet, polite, patient, hiding from the relentless drizzle under the bridge, awaiting their turn.
